Can you Pl also tell where I can check the Field length setting(basic setting) for BOM/Recipe characteristic value (no of Chars) in SPRO. If the number of field length setting for a characteristic value  ex., can be set as maximum of say 18 , then increasing the field length (no of Chars) from 3 to 4 would not create a problem in BOM/Recipe. Whether my understanding is correct.
